Petersburg, VA Churches

Yesterday we decided to take a ride to historic Petersburg, VA. We didn't really tour anything, just rode around. We did go to the Visitors Center and got a lot of great information about Petersburg and things to see.

Being a Methodist, I always look for the older/historical Methodist churches. This one is in downtown Petersburg and as you can see by the marker, has a lot of history. We were going to attend church there this morning, but I've found another one nearer the campground, that has a historical background. I'll post about it with a picture later.

Unfortunately, this is a very large church and being in the downtown area, getting a picture of the entire structure was impossible. The below picture is of the main sanctuary building. There are two smaller buildings on each side that look like the main building.

This church, St. Paul's Episcopal certainly has it's mark in history. As you can see by the marker, Gen. Lee attended church here during the Petersburg siege. The church was not open so could not get pictures from inside. I would bet that they have a pew marked with the fact that Gen. Lee sat here! Also could not get the entire spire in the picture - couldn't get the distance, but it goes up probably another 20 - 30 feet.

We plan on going back to drive the battlefield and tour Blandford Church and cemetery. The church has stained glass windows created by Tiffany.

Till later....
