Some Fun Time

Saturday - July 3rd

As promised, we did find something fun to do.

We found a Jubilee was being held in Smithville, TN which is about 65 miles from Nashville. It sounded like fun and it would get us out of town.

We took the back roads and had a nice drive through the hills of Tennessee on our way to Smithville. Arriving, we got a close parking spot, which was very lucky on our part as the streets were jammed with cars. We walked to the stage area and found a couple of seats. Now there was some really good entertainment going on. It was buck dance competition. Next was the fiddle contest then the bluegrass band contest. Wow, we love this type of music and certainly got our fill.

This is a big annual event here in Smithville, TN. They close off their town square and it is lined with vendors, food and crafts of all kinds. On the east side of the courthouse there is a big stage where all the contests are held and on the west side of the courthouse their is another tent where some of the bands play for strictly entertainment. Lots going on here!

After a couple of hours of sitting in the hot sun watching the entertainers, we found a little restaurant just off the square and had a sandwich and cooled down. Then it was back for more contests. It was now time for the National Championship Country Music Beginners. This is a contest for kids ages up to 12 to compete. My favorite! Buck dancing, clogging, and fiddle contests for the young one. How neat!

We stayed for a few more hours and watched some very talented children perform until we finally gave in to the heat and decided to leave. I would have loved to stay but there wasn't one little spot of shade available, it was all taken by others who had been there since 9 am! The announcer has said that it would probably end sometime just before mid-night. Wow, and this was the second day!

What they do is have everyone in a particular category perform, then the judges pick the top three. Later in the evening those top three come back and perform for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. They are awarded cash prizes for their win.

I took a few pictures and have posted them at Picasa. Thanks for coming by.
