Quilts, Quilts and More Quilts

Today we drove back to Robertsdale, AL from Montgomery to go to the quilt show at Robertsdale UMC. They have this show every other year on the odd year. It is held at the church we used to attend when we had our stick and brick house in Robertsdale.

The main purpose for going down was to see a dear friend, Peggy Wilcox. Dean & I went with Peggy and her husband Jerry to several blue grass festivals in Mississippi and really enjoyed them. Jerry played the banjo and Peggy picked on the bass. The most fun was when they would have the "pickers" gather at some ones RV for a evening of just good ole down home pickin. Sadly, Jerry when to his heavenly home several months ago and Peggy is moving to just outside Houston, TX.

Now to tie the two together - Peggy is the chief organizer of the quilt show at the church. I have to add that she does a wonderful job! Because she is moving, I figured this would be a great time to see her and also be able to see some of our church friends, along with viewing beautiful quilts. I was right!

Peggy looked wonderful - she always has a glow about her and has a beautiful smile for everyone. She certainly shows the love of God everywhere she goes. I wish I could be more like her. I was glad to see that the church honored her and all the hard work she has put into years of quilt shows by giving her a room for just her quilts. They were displayed on all the walls and each and every one showed her talent.

Peggy, my friend, we will certainly be seeing you anytime we are near Houston.

A little about the quilt show. As I mentioned, this is held at the church and they use the Sunday School rooms, hallways, fellowship hall, the chapel and the sanctuary to display the quilts. This years show was the largest I remember. Almost all the quilts are made by church members or someone in their family. There are some quilts that are brought in by visiting snowbirds, which just adds to the diversity of the show. None of these quilts are for sale, they are display only. The quilts are a mix of newly made, a couple of years old and antique. This year they had three quilt shops bring in supplies for sale to those who are into quilting. The church charges an admission fee and also has a soup, salad and dessert lunch for sale. Of course, everything is homemade. What makes this quilt show unique from others that I've seen is the way they are displayed. Members of the church bring in antiques and they are used in the setting up of the displays. Certainly makes it more interesting than just looking at hanging quilts, at least to me, since I'm not a quilter. I still enjoy looking at the handwork though.

I took quite a few pictures of just a sampling of the quilts on display. To really appreciate them, they have to be viewed in person, but even the pictures show the beauty, the thought and the hard work that is behind each one. There is one picture that I took of just one of the squares of the quilt to try to show how each piece in the square is attached. I didn't get a picture of the whole quilt, I'm sorry. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pictures and if you are a quilter, maybe you'll get some new ideas for your next one. You can see the pictures at - www.picasaweb.google.com/SchultzTravelPhotos2009

Dean's mother and grandmother where quilters and when we had our stick and brick house we had quite a few quilts that were made by them. Several years ago they were part of the display at the quilt show. His Mom would have been embarrassed at all the attention that was given to them but we were proud to have their hard work on display. I have one that I kept, in storage, and the others where given to our children. Unfortunately, I don't think David ever got his back from his ex after the divorce. My hope is that she will return it to David or that she will give it to Morgan so it stays in our family. There is sentimental value attached to the quilt!

After our visit at the show, we headed on to Foley and our favorite Chinese restaurant. We haven't been able to find one in Montgomery and have had a big craving for Chinese food. It was as good as always. While there we saw our neighbor from the old neighborhood. That was a nice surprise. Of course we took time to catch up on what was going on with her, the neighborhood and our lives.

We then went shopping and early evening retired to the motel. Tomorrow morning we are going to Marlow UMC, which is where we started going when we were parked at Rainbow Plantation last winter. Then it's back to Montgomery for a busy week.

Till next time.....

Beautiful quilts. I used to hand quilt and have made several, but quit because I really couldn't hold that little needle any longer. I really appreciate the work that goes into making a quilt.

Thanks for the photos.
